Candidates appear at Democratic convention
Frank Holleman, candidate for state Superintendent of Education, said he wants to be the leader of "public education," whereas his potential opponents are "dedicated" supporters of tax credits, vouchers or both "that would take money from public schools at a time of severe budget crisis."

Education candidates: SC schools face challenges
Greenville attorney Frank Holleman, who is running for the Democratic nomination, drew the most applause when he said anyone running for the post should support public education and not programs that give parents vouchers or tax credits to send their children to private schools.

Last week, South Carolina was one of 15 states selected in a competition to be considered for the Race to the Top grants awarded by the U.S. Department of Education. South Carolina was chosen from among 39 states and the District of Columbia to advance to the final stage for this first round of Race to the Top grants.
