Supporting Historically Black Colleges

There is no better was to celebrate Black History Month than to support South Carolina’s historically black colleges and universities.  These colleges have played a central role in South Carolina’s education history and today extend educational opportunities to South Carolinians, as well as students from other states and nations.

In March, the heritage of South Carolina’s private historically black colleges will be celebrated at a United Negro College Fund gala on March 11 at the Carolina First Center in Greenville beginning at 7 p.m.  Tickets are $100.  This event benefits the following UNCF institutions:  Allen University, Benedict College, Claflin University, Morris College, and Voorhees College.  Other UNCF galas are held in other cities in the state throughout the year.

South Carolina State University is the state’s public HBCU.  You can donate to the university and find out about its work at www.scsu.edu.

I have had the opportunity to serve as a trustee of Voorhees College, to help with the UNCF galas through the years, and to work with S.C. State University in connection with the University Center.  These colleges are a key part of South Carolina’s education heritage and its education future.
